The John P. Kalaman Memorial Scholarship

The John P. Kalaman Memorial Scholarship was established in 1998 after John, a Centerville Police Officer, was killed in the line of duty while assisting a disabled motorist on I-675. He was a devoted member of the Centerville Police Department, and according to John's parents, "John entered law enforcement, not only to preserve order in the community, but also to elevate human dignity by helping people feel good about themselves, especially those who had fallen on difficult times. John saw the inherent value of each person and had a special affection for children and the elderly. He treated all people with equal respect and just the right touch of humor. When John was nearby, you could actually feel your heart smile."

Three separate, renewable scholarships are offered each year. John firmly believed that education and knowledge were the keys to success in life and in a career. John was a caring individual who loved serving his community. He would be humbled and proud to know how many local students are benefiting from this scholarship.
