Five New Members Welcomed to Governing Board

The Dayton Foundation has appointed five new members to its Governing Board, which provides stewardship for the Foundation and its charitable activities. They are Art Harlan, Valerie Lemmie, Alice O. McCollum, Martha Shaker and Joshua Stucky.

Art Harlan

Art Harlan joined Henny Penny Corporation in 1992 and served in management roles through 2017, including treasurer, chief financial officer and executive vice president. He currently is an advisor to management and a member of the company’s board of directors. An active member of the Greater Dayton community, Art has served on boards for the American Red Cross Miami Valley Chapter, United Way of the Greater Dayton Area and YMCA of Greater Dayton.

Valerie Lemmie

Valerie Lemmie has served as city manager for Petersburg, Virginia; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Dayton, Ohio, where she was the first woman and first Black person to hold the position. She also was commissioner on the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio and district director and acting chief of staff for Congressman Michael Turner. Today, Valerie is the director of exploratory research for the Charles F. Kettering Foundation. A valued community volunteer, she has held positions on the boards for Dayton History, Initiatives of Change USA, Matriots Ohio and National Civic League. Valerie previously served as a board member for the National Academy of Public Administration, National Forum for Black Public Administrators and SIVIO Institute (Zimbabwe).

Alice McCollum

The Honorable Alice O. McCollum became the first woman judge of the Dayton Municipal Court in 1979 and the first woman and Black person to be elected Montgomery County Probate Judge in 2002. Now retired, Alice serves on the Dayton Legal Heritage Foundation board and is an elder and 40-plus-year member of Trinity Presbyterian Church. Her past board memberships include Dayton Children’s, The Dayton Foundation’s Self-Sufficiency Board, Dayton Live, United Theological Seminary and Wright State University Foundation.

Martha Shaker

Martha Shaker has served as president of Concept Rehab, Inc., for 26 years, providing essential rehabilitation services for residents in skilled nursing facilities and assisted living communities across multiple states. With a longstanding love of the arts, Martha serves on the board for Dayton Live and is a former member of the Dayton Art Institute Associate Board. She also chairs the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society board and was named its 2015 Woman of the Year.

Joshua Stucky

A lifelong resident of the Miami Valley, Josh Stucky is the proprietor of Square One Salons & Spas and is an Elementary Education professor for Wright State University. Previously, he taught in the Kettering City School District for 25 years. Josh also is a cofounder of The Rubi Girls, a nonprofit organization supporting LGBTQ+ initiatives that has raised more than $2 million for HIV/AIDS and gay-related causes in the past 30 years. A 2015 TEDx Dayton speaker, Josh is a well-known public speaker on human rights and the impact of the LGBTQ+ community on the American way of life.

Scholarship Advisory Committee Seeks Volunteers

Are you looking for a way to help youth pursue their dreams? Consider joining The Dayton Foundation’s Scholarship Advisory Committee, which reviews and scores scholarship applications online in March, April and May of each year. If you are comfortable using a computer, have good internet connection and enjoy reading about future scholars, this is a perfect volunteer opportunity for you! Your attendance only is required for a few meetings each year, which can be done in person or remotely.
